Cardno ENTRIX: Your Partner for REACh Authorisation Compliance

The first installment of the REACh Annex XIV list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) was released on February 17, 2011. Six SVHC substances have been moved from the candidate list to the authorisation list.

Substances in Annex XIV cannot be placed on the market or used unless authorisation has been granted for a specific use. If your company's chemical inventory includes any of these substances or others that will be included on the Annex XIV list in the near future, then you will be obligated to complete an Authorisation application to allow continued use of your SVHC chemical(s).

The Authorisation application procedure can be onerous and involves:

  1. Demonstration of adequate control of risks associated with substances in question;
  2. An analysis of alternative replacement chemicals; and
  3. Completion of a Socio-economic Analysis (SEA) in cases where risks cannot be adequately controlled or where risks require supporting rationale.

Corporate resources are likely to be strained regardless of whether your Authorisation application efforts take the "adequate control" route, the SEA path, or a combined approach.
