Lake Tahoe's Third Creek Restoration Project
Charley Miller, senior consultant with Cardno ENTRIX, Inc. was recognized in the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza for his part on what was probably the fastest stream restoration project done in the history of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Charley managed Third Creek restoration efforts which highlights include bank stabilization on the creek designed to prevent sediment from filtering into Lake Tahoe, improved aquatic wildlife habitat in the creek with the creation of seasonal wetlands and improved fish passage and an overall beautification of the recreation area with the planting of native riparian vegetation. Tim Abbe provided technical oversight, Brendan Belby was the project geomorphologist, Chad Krofta was lead designer, Tom Taylor was the Senior Aquatics Biologist and Shaun Buckman was the onsite construction inspector. Several innovative techniques were utilized on the project including log V-weir grade controls, vegetated coir logs, activation of a remnant channel, and boulder baffles.
This was truly a team effort to get this project completed in the time frame allotted. Every member of the team brought something unique and enabled us to achieve such a special project.
